The Challenge
Muslim investors lacked a comprehensive Sharia-compliant investment platform, and many avoided stocks, commodities and currencies over Riba and Haram revenue concerns. Certification approaches tolerate a degree of non-compliance, there was no easy way to monitor holdings on an ongoing basis, and Zakat calculation was largely manual.
Investors staying out rather than risking non-compliance.
Certification standards allowing a margin of non-compliance.
Compliance checked at purchase, never after.
Per-asset calculation done by hand each year.
Approach & Solution
smartData built a React Native mobile app on a MERN backend delivering portfolio management, asset analytics and a built-in Zakat calculator. Automated compliance monitoring runs through APIs and scheduled jobs that continuously re-check each holding's Sharia status against certification standards rather than fixing it at purchase.
Zakat is calculated per asset according to intention — short-term trading treated differently from long-term investment — and asset screening filters by industry, market capitalisation and country. The experience is bilingual in English and Arabic with full right-to-left support.
Key Features
Holdings re-screened automatically, not once at purchase.
Trading and investment holdings calculated differently.
Filter by industry, market cap and country.
Full Arabic interface alongside English.
